DVLA Medical Requests – Important Information

If you need a medical form completed for the DVLA, please be aware of the following:

Completing DVLA medical forms is a private service outside of the standard NHS contract, meaning GPs are entitled to charge a fee for this work

The DVLA has not increased its payment since 2004, with the current fee of £42 falling far short of what is required. This means GPs are effectively subsidising this service from their own pockets.

The British Medical Association (BMA) has urged the DVLA to increase reimbursement rates, warning that current payments unfairly burden doctors.

The DVLA requires us to request a revised fee before any work is done. We adhere to this process, but the DVLA refuses to pay the appropriate amount. As a result, we cannot proceed with completing forms unless payment is made. The DVLA refuses to pay the required fee while attempting to shift blame onto GPs. Any delays in completing forms are due to the DVLA’s failure to pay appropriately, not our practice. Patients with concerns should contact the DVLA directly.

We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to direct any complaints about delays or payments to the DVLA, as this issue is beyond our control.

You can contact the DVLA medical team by calling 0300 790 6806 Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 7 PM and Saturday, 8 AM to 2 PM.
